How to take class notes you'll actually be able to revise from
Most notes are unusable three weeks later. Four methods compared, what to do in the ten minutes after class, and how to structure notes so they can be turned into questions.

There are two jobs a set of notes can do, and they conflict. During class, notes are a capture device: get it down before it's gone. During revision, notes are a retrieval device: find and test the thing you need. Notes optimised for the first job are usually terrible at the second, which is why so many students open a folder in May and find forty pages of transcription they can't use.
The fix isn't a prettier system. It's accepting that revision-ready notes are made after class, from capture notes, in about ten minutes.
Four methods, honestly compared
Linear transcription — writing down what's said, in order. Best capture rate, worst revision value. If the lecture is fast and unfamiliar, this is the correct thing to do in the room; just don't imagine you're finished.
Cornell — page split into a narrow left column, a wide right column, and a summary strip at the bottom. Notes go right, questions and cues go left, summary at the end. Its real advantage is structural: the left column is a self-test, so the notes come pre-converted into recall practice. Cover the right side, work down the cues.
Outline — nested bullets by hierarchy. Excellent for well-structured material (law, taxonomy, anything with a clear tree), poor for lectures that jump around, because you spend the lecture fighting the indentation.
Mapping / concept maps — nodes and labelled arrows. The best format for material where the relationships are the content: causes, cycles, systems, interacting processes. Weak for detail-heavy material — you can't fit twelve dates on an arrow.
Most students end up with a sensible hybrid: linear capture in the room, then restructure into Cornell or a map afterwards. The restructuring is not busywork; it's the first review, at the point when reorganising is still possible because you remember what the lecturer meant.
The ten minutes after class
This is the highest-leverage habit in this whole article. Before you leave, or on the bus:
- Mark the confusions. Anything you wrote down without understanding gets a symbol in the margin — a "?" is fine. These are the questions to ask while asking is still cheap.
- Write three cue questions at the top of the page. Not a summary — questions, whose answers are on the page.
- Fill the obvious gaps while your memory can still reconstruct the missing half-sentence. In three weeks it's gone.
- Name the page properly: topic, date, and where it sits in the syllabus.

Structure notes so they can become questions
Whether you plan to make flashcards yourself or have software do it, the same structure helps — and it's a good discipline regardless, because it forces you to separate what you must know from what was context.
- One idea per line. A paragraph containing four facts becomes one bad flashcard; four lines become four good ones.
- Definitions get a consistent marker. A leading "def:" or a box, used the same way every time, so you can find every definition in a topic in one pass.
- Keep the lecturer's exact wording for anything examinable. Terminology earns marks; your paraphrase might not.
- Formulas on their own line, with a note of what each symbol is and when the formula applies. A formula without its conditions is a trap you have set for yourself.
- Worked examples stay whole — but add one line at the end naming the method and the tell that pointed to it, otherwise you've stored an answer rather than a technique.
- Mark hierarchy explicitly. If it's a main claim with three supporting details, make that visible. Notes with flat structure become flat, undifferentiated revision.
Typing or handwriting?
You'll find studies suggesting handwriting wins because it forces you to compress rather than transcribe verbatim; you'll also find that the effect isn't as robust as it's popularly reported. The honest answer is that the mechanism matters more than the medium: compression is what helps. If you type fast enough to transcribe verbatim, you're bypassing the thinking, and you should deliberately paraphrase. If you handwrite so slowly that you miss half the content, you have the opposite problem.
Practical compromise many students land on: type for speed in dense lectures, handwrite for maths and diagrams, and — either way — do the ten-minute restructure afterwards, where the real compression happens.
Notes for slide-heavy courses
If the lecturer publishes slides, do not re-write the slides. That's copying, and it feels productive while teaching you nothing. Instead:
- annotate what was said that isn't on the slide — that's where the examinable explanation usually lives;
- write the question each slide answers;
- flag the slides the lecturer lingered on or called "important". Lecturers signal their exam papers more than they realise.
What makes notes unusable, in order of frequency
- No dates or topic labels, so nothing can be found.
- Verbatim transcription with no hierarchy — everything looks equally important, so nothing is.
- Never revisited, so the confusions from week 2 are still confusions in week 12.
- Split across three apps, a notebook and some photos of a whiteboard.
- No questions anywhere, so revising them can only mean re-reading them.
Every one of those is fixed by the ten minutes after class.
Getting more out of notes you already have
If your existing notes are already a wall of text, you don't have to rewrite them. Extract from them instead: work through a topic and pull out every definition, formula and claim as a question, then throw the prose away for revision purposes. A messy set of notes is a perfectly good source; it's just a bad revision tool.
